Hearts and Swords: Four Original Stories of Celta - Robin D. Owens Like every Celta book I've read so far, I devoured this. It was wonderful to see the stories of some of the secondary characters from other Celta books. I particularly enjoyed Genista's story.
The Princess and the Goblin (Puffin Classics) - George Macdonald I decided to reread this because I was feeling in need of a fun, cozy book from my childhood. I didn't remember much detail about the book, just remembered that I loved it when I read it as a kid. I definitely enjoyed it this time around too; it was nice to revisit the story and characters. This book would make such a great family movie.
I was pleasantly surprised to realize that the vocabulary in this book is at a fairly high level--not something I would have picked up on as a kid. Just goes to show that you don't have to dumb things down for kids as much as some books do today. The didactic element stood out to me more reading it this time, but although a bit old-fashioned, it doesn't bother me too much. After all, stories are one of the main ways kids do learn.
All in all, I'm glad this book stood up to my fond memories of it, and I'll definitely keep it around for the next time I need a comfort reread.
Grail - Elizabeth Bear Solid ending to the trilogy, although I enjoyed the first two books more; I would recommend the series to any SF fan.
Pandaemonium - Ben Macallan I loved this book, and highly recommend it, except that it picks up almost exactly where the first book, Desdaemona, left off, so if you haven’t read Desdaemona you should read that first.
